Over recent weeks our form has been a little varied and it is important that following last Saturdays excellent performance, we must carry that into todays fixture and begin to build some momentum. Although it is early in the season it is highly important to get points on the board as soon as possible, especially if we are to have aspirations of being amongst the title challengers. Our last game here was back on Wednesday 19th September against Halstead Town. Following a closely fought contest both sides settled for a point in what was a very quick and competitive match. It gave us the chance to pit our wits against one of the pre-season title favourites. Both sides worked hard but I felt we edge it and should have stole the points on the balance of play. We had the FA Vase fixture to look forward to on the Saturday where we travelled to Tilbury’s ground to play Eton Manor of the Essex Senior League. The Vase is another prestigious trophy and no incentive should have been needed to want to perform in the game. However a disastrous performance culminated in us losing 3-0 and we deserved the criticism we took after the game. I’m not one for holding back and I pull no punches when I say quite simply, it was an embarrassing performance by us all. In football as we know there are always winners and losers but it is the manner in which defeat is taken that can define a side. We started brightly but after conceding a soft goal, we went to pieces all over the park and were duly punished. The stern talking to after the game certainly made for an unpleasant journey home but gave us a chance to reflect on where we want to progress to as a side. A tough trip was on offer at early pace setters Thetford Town the following week and despite a slow start we began to control affairs and should have won comfortably. Too many chances were spurned as we settled for a 1-1 draw, but the performance had improved. March Town were next in line and is always a fairly hostile place to play but full credit to the lads they dominated the game and won convincingly. I was a frustrated spectator following the previous weeks injury, but I was delighted for the lads and the manner in which we played. It was great to keep a clean sheet, score three goals away from home, see youngsters taking responsibility and Dale Badcock getting his first goal for the club. It was a great day all round. Following Saturdays great win it was hardly expected to get any better but Sunday proved to be just that as Walden fever rained supreme in Huntingdon!!!!!! Sunday afternoon and Huntingdon Racecourse were the setting for "Wacky Macky Bear" to firmly put the club on the map as Darren Forster, better known as Geordie to us all, stole the show in the Grand National Mascot Race!!!! Facing stiff opposition from over fifty other competitors, Geordie beat all and everyone before him as he stormed across the finish line leaving everyone trailing in his wake. For those of us in attendance our vocal support momentarily changed to stunned silence as he took the lead before the excitement set in and we all went wild as he crossed the line!!! As if it couldn't have got much better, the race itself was aired live on Sky Television as the nation watched "Wacky Macky Bear" romp home. Despite attempts from Sheffield Uniteds mascot to trip our new hero (a brave move considering he doesn't know Darren!!!!) a simple side step-reminiscent of a world cup rugby win-and he powered home. I don't think we could fully believe the magnitude of what Geordie had accomplished until the other competitors crossed the line and the media went crazy!!! TV interviews, Press photography, celebrity horse racing icons, trophy presentations and not forgetting my favourite, the pictures taken by The Sun Newspaper, with their very own model and beaten Olympic Hurdler Matt Douglas who was running for them!!! They were surprised they had been beaten, even more so that Geordie had been given a start line handicap and still won. Who knows maybe we'll see "Wacky Macky Bear" featuring at the 2012 Olympics????? It is a moment Darren and his family can be proud of, and rightly so. We are all thankful to him for being a good sport and his victory has done wonders for the club. Geordie runs the Under 11s side, supports the team vocally both home and away and is a friend to all those of us at the club. He is a top man and one of those people who you cant help but love so fair play and credit where its due!! Lets hope to keep the recent buzz around the club and start to push on in the league campaign Thank you, for your continued support. All the best. Tommy Archive . |
