Bloods Beaten by Borough
Haverhill Borough 2
Saffron Walden Town FC 1
A last minute header from centre back Cameron Watson secured all three points for Haverhill Borough in front of a damp and wet New Croft crowd on Friday night.
Borough started well with both Ryan Weaver and Charlie Holmes going close in the opening minutes. Weaver saw his shot cleared off the line after a good run, only for Holmes to be denied by the upright after beating Walden ‘keeper Neil O’Sullivan to his left hand side.
Borough continued to press and looked the more likely of the two sides to score, but as has been the case for much of the season, a defensive slip saw them go into the break behind.
Slack marking at a free kick saw the ball reach Lewis Francis on the far side of the penalty area and he evaded the Borough defence before firing home.
Borough’s dominance of possession continued in the second period. Casey Phillips shot over from a corner from the six yard box in the 59th minute, before the equaliser came via a slice of luck.
A powerful shot from Rory Bone took an unkind deflection of a Walden defender and beat O’Sullivan to leave the game level with 15 minutes to play.
As the clock counted down into full time it looked as if Borough’s possession was to count for little, although they finally snatched the points in dramatic fashion. A late corner from Ryan Swallow found Cameron Watson in the Walden six yard box, and although he was marked by a number of defenders he somehow managed to nod the ball past O’Sullivan to give the hosts a welcome three points.
