Bloods Back to Winning Ways
Saffron Walden Town FC 2 – Hadleigh United FC 0
31st March 2018
The Bloods ended their three game losing streak with a confident 2-0 win over Hadleigh United.
Wardley’s men had key people missing due to injury, so U18’s defender Joe CUNNING earned his first start for the first team. Cunning was partnered with Wardley, and certainly showed that he can compete at this level.
Hadleigh had the first great chance on goal, after Kyron Andrews stung the hands of goalkeeper Neil O’Sullivan. The ball rebounded off O’Sullivan but he pounced onto the ball, before Hadleigh got the chance to shoot again.
Shortly after Hadleigh had another great chance after a mistake from Julian Simon-Parson. Andrews broke free and had a great chance to score, but O’Sullivan pulled off an excellent save.
Tom Lakin was given his first start for a few weeks and did not disappoint. He came very close to scoring after he ran on to Charlie Portway’s squared pass, but goalkeeper Punter produced a great save.
Julian Simon-Parson didn’t let his early mistake affect him, and won the ball back with a strong tackle. He went for a long dipping shot, but Punter made a finger tipped save, to carry the ball over the crossbar.
The Bloods pressure paid off with a goal by Lakin on the 26th minute. The combination of Portway and Lakin was working well, when Portway played the perfect pass for Lakin to run onto. Lakin placed the ball passed the diving Punter and into the back of the net.
Lakin came close to scoring a second goal, but his headed effort was just wide of the post.
The Bloods started the second half well, and took control of the match, whilst looking for the second goal.
The second goal came on the 53rd minute, and was scored by Greg Strong. Lewis Francis, skilfully kept the ball near the corner flag and slipped it to Simon-Parson. Simon-Parson crossed the ball into the six yard box, for Strong to nod the ball home.
Charlie Portway almost made it 3-0, but saw his effort bounce back from the crossbar.
