Saffron Walden scored twice in the second half against Wivenhoe Town to come back from a 1:0 half-time deficit.

The first chance of the game came in the 2nd minute, as Walden striker Charlie Portway fired wide from close range in the middle of the box.

However, the away boys were quick to put themselves ahead. In the sixth minute, a long ball over the defence found Harry Willoughby who took a touch and superbly lobbed the Walden goalkeeper, Neil O’Sullivan.

The next 20 minutes were fairly quiet in terms of chances, until Ryan Fleming saw his headed effort from a corner blocked off the line by a sharp Wivenhoe defender.

Whilst the Bloods dominated the first half in terms of possession, Wivenhoe went in at the break the happier side. Their very direct style of play had caused problems for Walden’s high defensive line.

Wivenhoe made the first real chance of the second half as midfielder Zak Johnson dribbled his way through the defence, only to fire the ball into the side netting. O’Sullivan did well to come off his line, putting Johnson under pressure in the 1 on 1 situation.

In the 58th minute, Portway looked certain to score but headed the ball over the open goal after an in-the-air pull-back from a fellow attacker on the left of the box.

Moments later, the Bloods equalised. Dan Trendall found himself in acres of space on the half way line and was able to dribble his way into the box where his initial attempt was saved, but the ball fell back into his feet and he was able poke it into the empty net.

The introduction of Walden substitute Joseph Maybanks brought a new dimension to the game. The youngster’s quick dribbling and perfectly timed passes seemed to give the whole team a boost. His first chance of the game came in the 68th minute, as he drove the ball across the goal-face, but no one was able to provide the crucial touch.

With 10 minutes to go, Walden grabbed the winner. A corner from over on the right hand side was met by Ashley Skeggs’ head from the middle of the box and found its way into the top right corner. It was his second goal in two games.

In the dying minutes of the game, Wivenhoe came agonisingly close to an equaliser. A scrap on the goal line turned into a large bundle of players, eventually resulting in free-kick being given to the home side.
