Saffron Walden Town FC 2 – Godmanchester Rovers FC 1

The Bloods came away with a narrow, but well deserved win on Tuesday night against an in-form Godmanchester Rovers side.

Rovers were five places above Walden and Wardley’s men knew they would be a very hard team to beat. In an action packed first half, the Bloods did enough damage to earn the points. Rovers ended up with two players sent off before the interval.

The Bloods started very well, showing great movement and skill. After a few attempts to break down the defence, Julian Simon-Parson struck the back of the net, 8 yard out. The ball was played over the top of the defence and headed to Simon-Parson. He took control of the ball, and struck it through the defence and under the diving keeper.

Julian continued to give the defence issues, and came close with a long range effort which was deflected, but only as far as Oliver Emsden. Emsden didn’t have long on the ball, as the keeper ran out to close the angle. His effort was heading for the goal, but the Rovers centre back cleared it off the line.

Walden’s second goal was from a penalty taken by James Crane. Dan Tendall ran onto a through-ball from the midfield, and was tripped in the area which resulted in a red card for Tom Moran. The keeper got his hand to the ball, but the pace of the shot was too much to keep out.

It was very eventful half, and the referee was very busy, as five minutes later Jack Chandler was given a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Ronnie Ledwith. Ledwith didn’t react to it and got up straight away, showing great professionalism.

This gave the Bloods lots of room, and they were trying hard to use the extra two men to their advantage. Dan Trendall was unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet, when he connected with Tom Lakin’s wicked cross, but again the defence did well and cleared the ball of the line.

Walden started the second half as they left off, and pushed for a third goal to see the game off. Simon-Parson came very close with a headed effort, after he connected well with another excellent cross from Lakin.

Dan Grindrod was introduced into the match on the hour mark and forced a great save from the keeper. The ball was deflected for a corner but Walden’s effort was cleared away.

Charlie Gray and Charlie Davies both came on and replaced Dan Trendall and Julian Simon-Parson in the 74th minunte. Gray almost scored with a spectacular long rang, curling goal but the ball struck the crossbar.

Walden were coasting and looked extremely confident for the win, but the three points was thrown into doubt when Godmanchester’s Matt Allan turned Ryan Fleming and struck the ball into the corner of the net.

The fans were willing the Bloods to hold onto the ball, and they worked hard to not allow Rovers any more opportunities at scoring a goal.
Right at the end Charlie Davies was unfairly send off after receiving two yellow card. Davies slid in and took the ball from the defender, but
the referee believed he made contact with the player.

The win takes the Bloods up to 8th place.
