Godmanchester Rovers 2 - Saffron Walden 0

Saffron Walden Town saw their hopes of promotion hit by defeat in windy Cambridgeshire on Wednesday

Manager Stuart Wardley named himself in the starting line-up, but the home side had the better of the opening exchanges, with an early effort deflected just over and a header sent wide.

But the Bloods had the best chance when Joe Maybanks saw a 25-yard lob tipped over by backpedalling keeper Phil Peachey.

Neil O’Sullivan was called into action at the other end as a Godmanchester player looked to prosper in the box, but the visitors had to replace Ronnie Ledwith with Thomas Lakin before the interval.

Blustery conditions made things difficult for both sides, but the hosts had a great chance to open the scoring on the stroke of half time when captain Mike Hyem beat his man in the box but placed his shot wide.

Walden went close after the restart, when Peachey flapped at a free-kick, but Rovers had chances in a scramble from a corner.

Jack Chandler and James Crane were just off target at either end of the pitch, before the home side took the lead with a soft goal when a long throw-in was headed on and somehow managed to beat O’Sullivan.

Hyem was denied a second by the Bloods keeper, who also saw Chandler spurn a great chance when losing his footing.

But Walden almost got back on terms with a shot that flew just over, before Charlie Portway and Charlie Gray came off the bench.

Rovers doubled their lead soon after, though, when a deep cross into the box found a player stealing in front of his marker to poke home.

And although Dan Trendall went close at the far post in the closing stages, Gray’s shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Peachey.

Walden will look to bounce back when they visit Histon on Saturday.
