Downham Town 0 – 2 Saffron Walden Town
A welcome return to action resulted in a
hard fought 2-0 win over a physical Downham
Town on Saturday 23rd January.
Walden were quick off the mark and as early
as the second minute Brad Green tested the
home sides goalkeeper with a fierce strike
that Daniel Green did well to hold on to.
Seconds later a swerving shot from Ben
Riches ricocheted off a defender into the
net putting “The Bloods “ a goal up 0-1
(3mins).
Greg Strong on a darting run through the
Downham defence slipped a ball to Mitchell
Das who let loose with a volley that Daniel
Green could only push wide for a corner.

Downham replied when Richard Fusel headed
over the bar for a corner kick (17). Das ‘s
pace beat the offside trap and picked out
Strong whose headed skimmed the Downham
crossbar (23).
Spike Bell ‘s curling corner kick found
towering Peter Flack who with a fierce
header hit the cross bar (30).
Second half saw Walden straight into the
attack and Strong shrugged off a heavy
tackle and his cross found Das but his
header hit the post (48).
Graeme Turner’s cross beat the packed
defence and Brad Green was quick to react on
a loose ball with a strike that his name
sake Green saved well (78).
Bell‘s pace on the wing beat his marker and
found Das unmarked and he curled a ball in
from the touch line to leave Captain Tommy
Butchart to blast home from close range 0-2
(80).
In the closing minutes Jamie Solkhon set
substitute Conor Wilson free on a run and
his spurt of pace beat his defender and he
let loose a strike that hit the side netting
(84).
