Pre-season looking strong for Bloods
Saffron Walden Town FC, have kicked of their preseason with 3 wins and one draw including an 8-1 victory over rivals Haverhill Borough on Saturday. They beat Hadleigh away 2-0 and Stortford Swifts 5-1, and drew 1-1 against Haverhill Rovers having just played Haverhill Borough in a mini tournament.
Manager Jason Maher and assistant Mark Hawkes has been very busy to bolster his management and football team. New to the management team is Mark Watters, Graeme Turner (Former player), Steve Marshall, Stacey Mercer (Physio) and kit manager Jason Franklin.
Recent signings includes striker Stuart Zanone and 16 year old Charlie Frodsham who is currently training with Colchester U23s. Frodsham played against Haverhill Rovers and Borough and certainly impressed the fans with his quick feet and got himself a goal. Both have shown the fans what they can do. Zanone has scored 5 goals in two games already.
Walden have also stengthened the squad with the experienced Jack Leachman, George Pullan, Arron Thomas and Ross Adams who have already impressed in preseason.
Most importantly the Bloods have retained the services of the majority of last season’s team, who finished 4th in the Essex Senior League. Striker Charlie Portway has started the pre-season extremely well and has already scored 7 goals in 3 matches.
Tom Lakin and Jack Mead have left and will be playing there football at Wivenhoe Town FC next season and the club wish them all the best.
The first team are still to play Colchester U23s at home (Tuesday 16th July), Debden at home (Sat 20th July as part of the Lee Owen memorial fundraiser which will feature Bloods former player Richard Chadwick, Anthony Choke, Peter Davies, Floyd Croll, Graham Turner, Joe Murphy, Max Drane, Darren ‘Biscuit’ Bicknell), May and Baker away (Tuesday 23rd), Bowers and Pitsea at home (Sat 27th July), Averley Reserves away (Monday 29th) and Halstead away (Tuesday 30th July). The reserve team have started their pre-season very well and have a great mix of talent. They have currently had 2 pre-season matches and have won both. New reserve manager Neil Bell and assistantants Mark Williamson and Shane Mills are looking forward to the new season. They have also retained the services of James Hayden (Goalkeeper Coach) and Nigel Keating (Fitness Coach). Also added to the team is Keven Dorsett who will be working on overall coaching.
On Sunday the 21st of July, SWTFC are hosting a special event to raise money for Archie Wilks, to help his fight against neuroblastoma. Organiser Daniel Pope has organised for a host of celebrities to take part in a special charity football match. Tickets are available online www.skiddle.com or on the gate. Adults - £10, Under 16's - £7, Under 2 – Free. They have an amazing line-up which includes the likes of Dan Osborne, Jake Quickenden, Jeff Brazier, Jamie O'hara, Jeremy Lynch, Razor Ruddock, Greg Shepherd, Paul Knightley, Cliff Parisi and many more.
